Republic – Immi S. Laxo – age 76 of 373 Koeber Ave., Republic passed into the Hands of our Lord quite unexpectedly at 11:24pm on Monday July 18, 2011 at the Marquette General Hospital.
Immi was born June 11, 1935 in Negaunee, MI the daughter of the late Frank and Anna Maria (Krummi) Makinen. Immi grew up in Rolling Mill Loc. and was a graduate of the Negaunee High School. She moved to Grand Rapids following graduation, moving back to this area shortly after and started her family. The family moved to Kellogg, Idaho for some years for work, returning to Republic in 1965, where she had resided since.
Immi had worked as secretary at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic. She was fond of music, and played the organ at the Bethany Lutheran Church, the Republic United Methodist Church and most recently at the Republic Apostolic Lutheran Church, where she was currently a member. Immi enjoyed motorcycling for many years, contacts with her Pen Pals, and wild flowers.
Survivors include her five children – Peter Laxo of Houghton, Frank (Ann) Laxo of Jenison, Duane (Lori) Laxo of Negaunee, Amy (Jim) Hilsabeck of Republic and Gordon (Geri) Laxo of Nashua, NH, a sister Rhea Heins of Grand Rapids, MI, grandchildren – Kris (Larry) Sawdo, Mike (Melissa) Sawdo, Ben (Ariane) Laxo, Adam Laxo, Jason (Jess) Laxo, Jessie Hilsabeck, Renee Hilsabeck, Seth Hilsabeck, Andrew Laxo and Jennifer Laxo, great grandchildren – Ariel, Angelica and Michael Laxo, Alexander and Reilly Sawdo and Miley Hilsabeck, 2 sisters-in-law – Gladys Makinen and Doloris "Dodo" Makinen, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends including special friends LaVerne Antilla who the family would like to thank for all she did that day, Jane Danielson and Barb Ogea. She was preceded in death by her parents and 3 brothers – Bill (Sylvia) Makinen, Ed Makinen and Oiva Makinen.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 2 until 3pm on Saturday July 23, 2011 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming. A memorial service will follow at 3:00pm on Saturday at the funeral home with Andy Kandoll to officiate. Inurnment will take place at the Republic Cemetery.
