Obituary

Ishpeming – Helmer O.E. Mattson, age 92, longtime Ishpeming resident, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Mather Nurisng Center in Ishpeming Twp. early Friday morning January 7, 2011.


A resident of Ishpeming since 1947, Helmer Oliver Erland Mattson was born in Ironwood, Michigan on July 25, 1918 to Andrew and Ida (Ogren) Mattson. He was a Graduate of the Ironwood High School, Class of 1938. After his discharge from the Army following World War II, he met and married Siiri "Theresa" Mattila of Ishpeming. They settled in Theresa's family home where he has lived ever since. Upon moving to Ishpeming, Helmer worked at Holmgren Motor Company and subsequently at Carroll Motor Supply.


Helmer loved helping people and was an active volunteer in the community. As a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming, for a number of years, he organized the blood bank drive and served on the Social Ministry Committee. A long-time member of the Ishpeming Credit Union, he actively served as a volunteer for a number of years. He was also a long-time active member of the Kaleva Lodge, the Ishpeming VFW Post #4573, and the Ishpeming Pioneer Kiwanis.


Helmer was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. His is survived by his son Richard (Deborah) Mattson of Ann Arbor, granddaughter Karen Gwyer of London, England, sister Helen Gersich of Madison, WI, cousin Ahti Nurmela of Ironwood, niece Marcia (Frank) Gronvall of Ishpeming, nephews - Guy (Carolyn) Gersich of Wadsworth, IL, Gery Mattila of Ishpeming and James (Lois) Gersich of Madison, WI, several grand-nieces and nephews, and dear friends too numerous to mention.


The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00am until 1:00pm on Tuesday January 11, 2011 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. Funeral services will follow at 1:00pm on Tuesday at the Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate, and Military Honors to be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be George Isola, Lisa Blondeau, Maurice Hansen, Ken Argall, Terry Thompson, Peter Johnson and Wesley Wentela. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Ishpeming Pioneer Kiwanis.
