Obituary

Helen M. "Mitch" Johnson, age 89, formerly of 325 Lost Creek Dr. Marquette, passed away on January 2, 2008 at Dirigo Pines Retirement Community in Orono, Maine, where she has been residing since November 30, 2007

Helen was born on September 28, 1918 to the late Richard W. and Anna (Hollum) Mitchell in Ishpeming. She graduated from Ishpeming High School in 1936 and attended Northern Michigan University for two years. Helen married Glenn W. Johnson on June 17, 1939.

In 1957, Helen and Glenn moved from the Upper Peninsula to the Lower Peninsula and She worked for the State of Michigan for 18 years at the Office of the Secretary of State, retiring in 1983. After retirement Helen resided in Lake Ann near Traverse City. She moved to Marquette in 2002. Helen was a member of the United Evangelical Covenant Church.

Family includes, 3 children: Elizabeth Brotherton and her husband Ray of Champion, Douglas Johnson and his partner Stephanie Poplock of Orono, ME, and Bruce Johnson and his wife Leslie of Lansing, MI, a daughter in law Adelaide Marceau, of Marquette, MI, wife of Glenn E. Johnson, a sister: Jeannette Ackley of River Forest, IL, 10 grandchildren: Helen (Paul) Groleau, Elizabeth (Fred) Benzie, Jeanne (Dan) Martfeld, Glenn (Vickie) Johnson, Barbara (Brian) Swenor, Joel Johnson, Jennifer Johnson, Kelsey Johnson, Kimberly (Brian) Howe, Christopher Johnson, 8 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Helen is preceded in death by her husband Glenn W. Johnson, sons: Glenn E. Johnson, and Paul W. Johnson, a brother Ellsworth "Pinky" Mitchell, and a sister Dorothy Bush.

A memorial service will be held at the United Evangelical Covenant Church on May 24, 2008 at 11:00a.m. with Rev. Terry Cathcart to officiate. Inurnment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Lake Superior Hospice, Baycliff Health Camp, or the United Evangelical Covenant Church in loving memory of Helen.
