Ishpeming – Harry A. Edmark Jr., age 85, of 510 Co Rd POS in Tilden Twp. passed away on Tuesday, February 05, 2008 in the Emergency Room at Bell Memorial Hospital.
Harry was born September 4, 1922 in Mountain, WI to the late Harry A. and Della (Fonder) Edmark Sr. He was a graduate of Cedarburg High School in Wisconsin and was employed by Edmark Sales and Service in Cedarburg from 1940 until 1942 where he was an assistant in business with his father in the sale and repair of automobiles. In 1942 Harry enlisted in the United States Army, graduating from the Automatic Weapons-Officers Training School, Camp David, North Carolina. He served 23 months in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater as an Anti-Aircraft Automatic Weapons Unit Commander. He was Honorably Discharged in 1946 with the rank of Captain. His service medals include the American Theater Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal with 1 battle star, the Soldier Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. After serving his country, Harry entered the insurance industry in Wisconsin working for the Kemper Insurance Company in 1946. He went on to work for the Maryland Casualty Company becoming a Resident Manager in Milwaukee, WI, later moving to Portland, OR and Seattle WA.
Harry moved to Ishpeming in 1971 from Seattle, WA and started the Iron Range Agency by combining three local agencies. He was a member of the Ishpeming VFW Post #4573 where he served at Past Commander and most recently as the Chaplain. He also belonged to the Ishpeming Elks Lodge #447 and the Ishpeming Rotary Club for many years. Harry was an avid boater and sailor in his earlier years, when he and his beloved wife Bernie, partook of many adventures. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed trips to Alaska during his time in the northwest. Harry loved gardening and was a master gardener. He and Bernie loved to travel and have been all over the world.
Harry's family includes 3 children: John Edmark of Seattle, WA, Tom (Shannon) Edmark of Ishpeming, and Kathy (Scott) Lyman of Ishpeming, 2 sisters: Joyce (Carl) Mintzlaff of Grafton, WI, Verene Edmark of Portland OR, a brother: Jim Edmark of Eugene, OR, 5 Grandsons: Kyle, Kory, and Kris Edmark, Dan and Mike Lyman, a special friend Shirley Teddy of Ishpeming, his cat "Kat" and several nieces and nephews. Harry was preceded in death by his wife Bernice in 1996.
Family will greet friends and relatives from 12:00noon until 2:00PM on Friday, February 8, 2008 at Christ the King Lutheran Church. Funeral Services will follow at 2:00PM with Rev. Tim Ott to officiate. A VFW service will take place at 1:30PM at the church. Inurnment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery Columbarium.
Pallbearers will be Harry's grandsons and nephew Kurt Mintzlaff.
