Obituary

Negaunee Twp. - Harold "Cookie" R. Plattenberg, age 66, of 26 Forge Rd., Negaunee Twp. passed away on Monday, February 18, 2008 at Bell Hospital in Ishpeming following an apparent heart attack.

Harold was born December 5, 1941 in Michigamme the son of the late Alfred L. "Bunny" and Ruth A (Wedin) Plattenberg. He was a graduate of the Michigamme High School, Class of 1959 where he was a star basketball player. Harold moved to Kenosha Wisconsin briefly in the early 1960's working for American Motors. On August 3, 1963, Cookie married the love of his life Esther Peterson and began a family. He went on to work as a Police officer for Negaunee Twp, followed by 28 years of service for the Marquette Co. Sheriffs Dept., starting as a road patrol, and working his way to Lt. Detective where he retired in 1996. During the years, "Cookie" played softball and basketball in the Negaunee City Leagues.

Harold was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Negaunee and the Negaunee Elks Lodge #1116. "Cookie" enjoyed duck hunting and snowmobiling in his younger years. Once retired, he took on 2 part time jobs with the Ishpeming Public Schools as a janitor and testing new snow removal equipment for various companies during the winter months. During his free time he played cribbage and loved to go to the casino. "Cookie" loved spending time with his 10 grandchildren who called him "PAPA" and loved bringing them out for ice cream, supplying them with lots chocolate candy, and pumpkin pie.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Esther (Peterson) Plattenberg of Negaunee Twp., 5 children – Dianne (Bobby) Botefuhr of Schaumburg, IL, Harold Plattenberg serving in the United States Army in Hawaii, Duane (Kristina) Plattenberg of Negaunee, Debbie (Phil) Argall of Ishpeming and David Plattenberg of Negaunee, 3 brothers – Norman (Carol) Plattenberg of Sugarland, TX, Gerald (Carolyn) Plattenberg of Humboldt, and Harland Plattenberg of Yuma, AZ, a sister Karen (Rick) Koski of Michigamme, 10 grandchildren – Elizabeth, Bryan, Daniel, Tyler, Joshua, Meghan, Zoe, Sarah, Matthew, and Ethan, an uncle – Richard Wedin of Spurr Twp., an aunt and uncle Robert and Edith Rajala of L'Anse, aunt Betty Hamel of Champion, and aunt Louise Hamel of Michigamme, along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 22, 2008 at 11:00AM at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. Laurel Halverson Bernard officiating.
The family will greet friends and relatives from 5:00 until 8:00PM on Thursday, February 21, 2008, where the Negaunee Elks will hold a memorial service at 7:00pm. Family will again greet friends on Friday, February 22, from 10:00 until 11:00AM at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.

Honorary pallbearers will be Harold's three sons and his three brothers.
