Ishpeming – Greta J. Nyquist, age 91, of 703 W. Empire St. #103A, Ishpeming passed away on Monday November 30, 2009 at her home in Ishpeming.
Greta was born April 14, 1918 in Taivalkoski, Finland the daughter of the late Juho and Maria Madleena (Parviainen) Tumelius. She grew up in Finland, and married Alvar Nyquist on August 13, 1939 in Helsinki, Finland. They came to America via New York on Nov. 30, 1950 on "The Argentina", moving on to Ishpeming where she resided since. Greta became a US citizen on May 17, 1956. She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church. Greta was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening and tending to her flowers. More recently she enjoyed watching animal shows, and WWF wrestling on TV, along with doing Find-A-Word and Crossword puzzles from the local newspaper.
Survivors include a sister Aune Maria Honkanen of Pudasjarvi, Finland, along with several nieces and nephews in Finland, a niece Dr. Ann-Christine Nyquist of Denver, CO, a nephew John Alvar (Marivic) Nyquist and their children Jonathon, Joshua & Jacob all of Sanford, NC, along with Peter E. Sayring of Ishpeming. She was preceded in death by her husband Alvar Nyquist in 1991, and a sister-in-law Eila Tuulikki Sayring in 1998.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 2:00pm until 3:00pm on Wednesday at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm on Wednesday December 2, 2009 at the funeral home with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
