Negaunee- Gordon Lee Ellis, age 81 of 98 Croix St. Negaunee and former Ishpeming resident passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where he resided for the past 3 weeks.
Gordon was born June 14, 1932 in Calumet to Richard & Dorothy (LaVigne) Ellis. Gordon's family moved to Negaunee where Gordy graduated from Negaunee High School, class of 1950-51. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War serving from1953 until his honorable discharge in 1955.
Gordon worked for US Steel as an underground miner at the Tracey Mine. He later owned and operated the Home Town Restaurant in Negaunee. Gordy was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, picking berries and had his favorite spot for picking morel mushrooms. Gordy was known as the "Candy Man" by many for always having a treat to hand out. He also was an excellent cook and baker known for his famous fudge. Playing cards was an enjoyable past time especially pinochle which he belonged to a pinochle group for 60 years. Gordon was a life member of the Negaunee VFW, VA Romo Post 3165.
Gordon is survived by 2 children: Ann (Dave Winquist) Sestito of Ishpeming, Dennis Sestito of Aladdin, WY, a brother Donald Ellis of Negaunee, 5 grandchildren: Connie (Josh) Larson, Vincent (Chris) Sestito, Denise (Ty) Hyatt, Terri Niemi and William Langson, 14 great grandchildren along with nieces and nephews. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, wife Concetta, a grandson Don Langson and 2 brothers: Robert "Pappy" (Ruth) Ellis, and Richard (Nancy) Ellis.
Funeral services for Gordon will be held at 3:30pm on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. Douglas Mater officiating.
Gordon's family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home form 2:00pm until the time of service at 3:30pm.
Military honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of American Chapter 380.
