Ishpeming - Glenn T. "Spike" Perry, age 83 of 769 Duncan Ave, Ishpeming passed away Monday, June 11, 2012 at his home while under the loving care of his family and UP Home Health & Hospice.
Glenn was born on April 20, 1929 in Republic to Leonard & Genevieve "Jenny" (Freeman) Perry. His family later moved to Negaunee where he lived until 1953 when he moved to Ishpeming. Glenn worked 41 years for Cleveland Cliffs, working at the Mather A, Humboldt, Republic, Tilden & Empire Mines where he retired from as a heavy equipment operator in 1989.
Glenn was active at the Grace Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry. He was also very active with the BPOE Elks Lodge #447 in Ishpeming where he served as Tiler, helped with pasty making and was named ELK of the Year in 2000-2001. Spike was involved with the Ishpeming Blue Notes, by chaperoning and bus driving, and still a faithful follower. Glenn was a past president of the Blue Note's parents club. Glenn also supported "Buzz the Gut". He was a Hematite Booster, and supported the sports his children and grandchildren played. In his younger years he enjoyed fishing and hunting and time spent at the family camp "Perry's 80 Acres".
Glenn is survived by his wife Joanne (DeRocher) Perry, whom he married on June 10, 1950 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Marquette, four children: Scott (Denise) Perry, David (fiancé Lori) Perry, Debbie (Gary) Romero and Susie (Ted) Heilala all of Ishpeming, 13 grandchildren; Bradley (Dannette) Perry, Pamela (Daniel) Waterman, Daniel (Melissa) Perry, Mark (Denise) Perry, Brian (Chrissy) Perry, Michael Perry, Jeff (Lora) Kinnunen, Jennifer Kinnunen, Kerry Lawson, Leslie (Derek) Berner, Christopher (Angela) Heilala, Joseph (Jennifer) Heilala, and Ryan Heilala, 20 great grandchildren, sister in law Mildred Perry of Negaunee, brothers in law & sisters in law Bill & Nancy Pyrzewski of Morley, MI and Dave & Judie Smukowski of Milwaukee, WI, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters: Delight Laurila, Jean Levi and a brother James Perry.
Funeral Services for Glenn will be held at 4:00PM on Thursday, June 14th at the Grace Episcopal Church in Ishpeming with Rev. Richard Graybill officiating. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Marquette.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 2:00-4:00pm on Thursday at the church where the Ishpeming ELKS Lodge #447 will conduct a memorial service at 2:30pm.
A luncheon will be held at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming following the service.
Pallbearers will be Jim Meyers, Ed Uuro, Tom Gardyko, Grandchildren: Jeff Kinnunen, Brad Perry & Chris Heilala. Honorary pallbearers will be the rest of his grandchildren.
