Schauland
September 2, 1917 – September 28, 2020
Marquette- Gladys Jeanette Schauland, age 103, longtime Marquette resident, closed her eyes on September 28, 2020 and opened them in heaven, where she was welcomed by the Lord Jesus Christ whom she loved and served.
Gladys was born September 2, 1917 in Cooperstown, ND to Norwegian immigrants Jens and Elisabet Lunde. They farmed near Cooperstown until Gladys was 3 years old, then moved to a farm near Detroit Lakes, MN where she grew up and graduated from high school. She and her sister Lenora attended Lutheran Brethren Schools in Fergus Falls, MN where she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior.
Gladys attended and graduated from Lutheran Deaconess School of Nursing in Minneapolis, MN August 1945, and then moved with her parents to Tucson, AZ where she worked in surgery at Pima County Hospital.
Gladys married the love of her life, Richard W. Schauland on June 25, 1946 and they lived in Barnum, MN, and Harvey, ND before moving to Marquette, MI in 1962. Four sons and a daughter, Ronald, Kenneth, Mark, Deborah, and Marvin were born to them. Gladys worked at Marquette General Hospital Emergency Room for 13 years, and raised her family. She and her husband were active members at Hope Free Lutheran Church in Ishpeming, MI.
Her Husband Rick, 2 sisters- Lenora and Hazel, 3 brothers- Palmer, Joel, Floyd, and her grandson Luke, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Ronald (Jeanne) Schauland of Appleton, WI, Kenneth (Sue) Schauland of Marquette, Mark (Margie) Schauland of Cody, WY, Deborah (Duane) Wyse of Kingsley, MI, and Marvin (Deborah) Schauland of Appleton, WI, her sister-in-law- Alice Lunde of Fergus Falls, MN, 14 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren whom she loved dearly.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 12:30pm until 2:00pm on Saturday October 3, 2020 at Hope Free Lutheran Church 795 North Lake Drive Ishpeming, MI, funeral services will follow at 2:00pm with Earling Langness officiating. At 1:50pm the UP Nurse Honor Guard will conduct a nurses honors ceremony just prior to the start of the funeral. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no refreshments served. There will be a celebration of her life and a pot-luck picnic held at the Church in June of 2021. Interment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens immediately following the funeral. Pallbearers will be Gladys' grandsons- Chuck Schauland, Nate Schauland, Tom Schauland, Scott Schauland, and Drew Wyse.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Gladys can be made to Hope Free Lutheran Quilting Group, or the Association Free World Missions.
