Ishpeming- Gladys G. Nurmela, age 85 former Wabash St. resident of Ishpeming passed away Saturday January 3, 2015 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility while in the loving comfort of her family.
Gladys was born December 26, 1929 in Laurium, MI to Urho & Elsa (Saari) Nopola. She graduated from L'Anse High School and attained her RN from St. Luke's School of Nursing in Marquette. Gladys worked at Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming for over 35 years, retiring in 1989.
Gladys was a active member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming where she served on the church council, participated in the former Stephens Ministries and belonged to Martha Circle. After retiring, Gladys didn't stop working, she was a volunteer for the auxiliary at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility, Lake Superior Hospice and RSVP.
Gladys had many hobbies some of which include reading,gardening, knitting and sewing, when she was younger she enjoyed skiing, camping, spending time at camp, boating, traveling. Family time and time spent with her grandchildren were very special to her. She was also a member of a local reading club and would enjoy her gatherings with the retired nurses group.
Gladys is survived by 5 children: David (Betsy) Nurmela of Negaunee, Catherine (Nancy Crane) Nurmela of Chicago, IL, Steven (Deanna) Nurmela of Champion, Donald (Marsha) Nurmela of Kingsford and James (Beverly) Nurmela of Upper Darby, PA, 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, a step brother Gabe (Judy) Hinze and a step sister Gaylin Hinze both of Milwaukee. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Peter in 2007.
A Memorial service for Gladys will be celebrated at 2:00pm on Thursday, January 8th at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming with Rev. Lauri O. Maki officiating. Glady's family will greet relatives and friends at Bethel Lutheran Church on Thursday from 12:00 noon until the time of service at 2:00pm.
A luncheon will be held in the church fellowship hall following the service.
