Obituary

Ishpeming, MI- Gilbert Allen "Gil" Dawe, age 92 of 660 Elliott Ave Ishpeming passed away Monday, January 20, 2014 at Bell Hospital where he had been a patient for 1 day. Gilbert was born January 31, 1921 in Vulcan, MI to James & Alberta (Alford) Dawe Jr. He attended Vulcan Schools where he graduated high school. He continued his education at Michigan State University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geological Sciences in 1949. Gil served his country in the U.S. Army-Air Corps with the 326th Troop Carrier Squadron, the 490th Bomb Squadron for the 10th & 14th Air Force during World War II. He received many decorations and was honorably discharged in 1946. Gil's professional career began in 1949 with Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company. He worked as a Geological Engineer, later in various supervisory and managerial positions and he retired in 1984 as General Manager of North American Iron Ore Mines. During his professional career he was a member of the American Mining Congress and American Institute of Mining Engineers. Gil served as a Board of Director on the Miners First National Bank and Trust Company, LS&I Railroad and the Marquette Range Iron Mining Heritage Theme Park. He was once active with the Hiawathaland Boy Scouts, Bay Cliff Health Camp and the Lake Superior Jobs Coalition. Gil enjoyed collecting minerals and woodworking. Gil is survived by his wife Florence (Johnson) Dawe, whom he married on July 1, 1949, four children: Nancy (Mark) Dryer of Ishpeming, Karen (Adrian) Lewandowski of St. Paul, MN, Kathryn Dawe of Ishpeming and James (Naomi) Dawe of Marquette, seven grandchildren: Matthew Dryer, Kathryn Lewandowski, Kimberly (Ryan) Anderson, David Lewandowski, Jennifer Lewandowski, Amy (Brandon) Boesl and Eric (Natalie) Dawe, three step-grandchildren: Jesse (Tasha) Vial, Ian Vial, and Paige Vial, five great grandchildren: Allen, Owen, Libby, and Aubrey Boesl and Jax Dawe. Gil was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson Andrew Dawe, two brothers: William and Edward Dawe and two sisters: Alice Gustafson and Lillian Pardon. Gil's family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00am-1:00pm on Friday, January 24th at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home where funeral services will take place at 1:00pm with CRE Mary Kelly to officiate. Entombment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens. Memorial considerations may be directed to the Cliffs Shaft Mining Museum, P.O. Box 555 Ishpeming, MI 49849 in memory of Gil Dawe.
