Jerry was born June 30, 1940 in Negaunee the son of the late Robert and Violet (Reichel) Smith. He grew up in Negaunee and was a graduate of the Negaunee High School, Class of 1958. Jerry worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. first at the Pioneer Pellet Plant and then as a welder in the pit at the Tilden Mine retiring on June 30, 1999.

Jerry was a lifelong area resident and most enjoyed time spent at camp on Lake Michigamme in the summers, where he loved to go boating or swimming. Prior to having his camp, he and Doris enjoyed camping and traveling. Jerry was an avid Detroit Tigers Fan, catching every game he could on TV. Although he was not a mechanic by trade, he would always tinker with vehicles. Jerry also dabbled in many construction projects over the years, listen to country music and loved to cook. He will be remembered as a family man, with a keen interest in his grandchildren's activities and hobbies. Christmas was his favorite holiday as Jerry was always willing to give and ask for nothing in return.
