Obituary

Ishpeming – George Watters, age 84, formerly of 255 Stoneville Rd. and more recently 717 W. Empire St. passed away Thursday, April 9, 2009 at Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming.

George was born in Ishpeming, Michigan on September 14, 1924, the son of the late Samuel and Jennie (Gjolme) Watters. He graduated from National Mine in 1942 before continuing his education at Northern Michigan University. He served in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant stationed in Iceland in the AAF motor pool during World War II and was honorable discharged in 1946 after earning several awards and decorations from the Army. He married Verna Opal Keto on August 28, 1948 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming.

George worked many years at the Bancroft Dairy and as a bus driver for the NICE school district. He was a life long area resident and member of Bethel Lutheran Church. George was also a member of the VFW and enjoyed his Wednesday night BINGO. George was a lifelong Boy Scout, serving the area as a troop leader for nearly fifty years, and taking much pride in his work of founding Troop 321. George enjoyed the outdoors, along with camping, hiking and hunting.

He is survived by two sons: Dale (Pam Bessolo) Watters and Tom (Marcy) Watters both of Ishpeming, 2 Grandchildren: Travis and Taylor Watters, a great granddaughter: Jaelynn and a special friend Lucille Heliste all of Ishpeming, along with several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by three sisters: Betty Mceachern, Grace LaValley, Kate Anderson, two brothers: Clint Watters, Raymond (Joyce) Watters. George was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters, Jim, Russell, Robert, Ethel Hartman, Olive Huot, a son Keith G. Watters in 1998, and his wife Verna in 2003.

Memorial Services will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church at 4:00PM on Monday, April 13th, with Rev. Lauri O. Maki officiating. The family will greet friends and relatives from 2:00PM until the time of services at the church. The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #380 will hold a military honors presentation along with members of the Ishpeming VFW Post #4573. A luncheon will follow the service. Inurnment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
