February 22, 1932 – May 25, 2023
Ishpeming Twp- George Duane "Pickles" Sundberg, age 91, Ishpeming Township resident passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at UP Health System Marquette.
George was born February 22, 1932, in Negaunee to the late Ragmar J. and Janice M. (Vecellio) Sundberg. He graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1950. He would go on to work for Cleveland Cliffs 1951-1992 for 41 years, retiring as Plant Supervisor.
George and Mary spent many winter trips living in Florida and Lake Havasu City, AZ, enjoying friends and many games of cribbage and dominoes. Pickles also spent every summer at Blue Lake at his camp that he built in 1962. He enjoyed fishing on Lake Superior on the boat he built "Little Alyson." Pickles was a self-taught master repairman who could fix just about anything. In his younger days he was an excellent fastpitch softball player. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and the Ishpeming ELKS Lodge.
George is survived by his wife of 66 years F. Mary (Paju) Sundberg, 4 children; Mark (Sheila) Sundberg of Ishpeming, Linda (Chuck) Cloninger of Greenleaf, WI, Alyson Sundberg of Ishpeming and Deb Rose of Smithville, TX, grandchildren; Michael (Chelsey) Sundberg, Matthew (Amy) Sundberg, Nicole (Shawn) Brinkman, Christy Cloninger, Jeffrey (Blair) Cloninger, Steve Nault, Jodie (Eric) Blackburn-Bradley, Charlotte (Mark) Curtis, a brother, Robert (Jean) Sundberg of Fairbanks, Alaska, ten great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Delores Palasz
Funeral services for George will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming with Pastor Bob Freysinger officiating. A visitation will be held from 10:30 am until the time of service at the Wesley United Methodist Church.
A luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall.
Pallbearers will be George's grandchildren.
Interment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens.
In lieu of flowers memorial considerations may be directed to the Gwinn VFW Post 5670, 54 N. Mitchell St. Gwinn, MI 49841 towards their renovation project.
