Obituary

Ishpeming- George Isaac Haavisto of 216 Ready Street, Ishpeming, passed away on Monday, December 13, 2010 after battling prostate cancer and diabetes for more than a decade. He was 81.

For the past 2 years, George received the most competent and compassionate care we could ever wish for from the staff at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility.

George was born in Ishpeming on June 11, 1929 to Isaac and Lempi (Heino) Haavisto. Since his parents had emigrated from Finland, he fluently spoke 2 languages.

George married Shirley Solka in June 1952, and they had two children- a son, John, and a daughter, Judy.

George began his working life at the age of 16. He worked for Robbins Flooring Mill and then for 30 years for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company before retiring in 1989.

George was honest, hardworking, and devoted to his family. He was quite the handyman and could fix just about anything. He was always helping someone fix something, and never turned anyone away who needed help.

George loved hunting and fishing, or just going for a ride out the woods. Deer season was his favorite time of year. He was happiest when at deer camp with family and friends.

George loved kids and animals, especially dogs. He adored his children and grandchildren

George is survived by his wife, Shirley, whom he married 58 years ago, his son John Haavisto and daughter in law, Sandy, and his daughter Judy Fountain and son in law, Daniel. He also leaves his grandson, Jesse Haavisto and grandson, Lance Haavisto and his wife Sarah. George has several loving nieces and nephews. He also leaves a lifelong friend and hunting partner, Billy Heikkila. George was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Irma, and brother, Frederick.

George was a good man in the woods.

The family will greet friends and relatives on Thursday, December 16, 2010 from 2:30-4:00PM at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. A memorial service will follow the visitation at 4:00pm with Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate.
