Gwinn - George W. Brewer, age 75, of 222 S. Shag Lake Dr. passed away Wednesday, March 18th, 2009 at Bell Hospital in Ishpeming.
George was born in Ishpeming, Michigan on November 14, 1933, the son of the late Wilfred and Lavina (Hares) Brewer. He was a 1951 graduate of Ishpeming High School and owned and operated a gas station/auto repair shop "Brewer's Service" in his earlier years in Ishpeming. George lived in Tilden Township for many years and was a licensed boiler installer operating Brewer's Heating for a number of years. He worked at the Republic Mine until 1982 and later the Empire Mine, working in almost all the craft jobs, before retiring in 1993 as an electronic repairman, after thirty years of service for Cleveland Cliffs.
George and his wife of 46 years Claire (Huot) moved to Gwinn eight years ago and enjoyed spending time on Shag Lake. He was a member of Gwinn United Methodist Church and the Gwinn VFW Men's Auxiliary for the past fifteen years. George belonged to the Ishpeming Cribbage League and was past president and a member of the Ishpeming Beagle Club for years. He enjoyed hunting rabbit, with his beagles and deer at his camp in the green hills. George's greatest love was being a pilot, along with driving his tractor and working on anything mechanic including his boats. George enjoyed visiting Cornwall where his ancestors came from.
George is survived by his wife Claire (Huot) Brewer of Gwinn, four sons: Steve (Bonnie) Brewer of Ishpeming, Bill (Lori) Brewer of Ishpeming, George (Donna) Brewer, Jr. of TX, and David Brewer of FL. He is also survived by 8 Grandchildren: Seth, Nathan, Ciara, Austin, Linde, Geordon, Madison and Truemy, Brothers-in-law: Sam (Lizanna) Hout of Rapid City, SD, Donald Jenkin of Dayton, OH, Sister-in-law: Carol Liubakka of Marquette, and a special cousin: Marion Ambercrombie of FL. George was preceded in death by a sister: Jean Jenkin.
Funeral Services will be held at the Gwinn United Methodist Church at 4:00PM on Saturday, March 21st, with Pastor Geri Hamlen officiating. The family will greet friends and relatives from 2:30PM until the time of services at the church. Interment will be the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Sam and Jeremy Huot, John LaCourt, Burt Bertocchi, Chuck Spangler, and Cesar Marchany.
Memorials may be directed to Gwinn United Methodist Church or to a charity of one's choice in George's memory.
