ISHPEMING, MI – Gene Raymond Keto, age 84, of Ishpeming, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at UP Health System – Marquette while in the compassionate care of the ICU staff.

Gene was born in Ishpeming on May 9, 1942, to Walter and Lydia (Manniko) Keto. He graduated from National Mine High School with the Class of 1961.

Following high school, Gene proudly served in the U.S. Navy until receiving his honorable discharge. After returning to the Ishpeming area, he began working for Cleveland-Cliffs as a blast crew operator and later retired from the Tilden Mine in 2002.

Gene enjoyed cars, camping, and spending winters in Arizona. Above all, he cherished the time he spent with his late wife, Catherine Hicks. He was a member of the VFW and will be remembered as a man who appreciated the simple pleasures in life.

Gene is survived by his brother, David (Brenda) Keto; step-granddaughter, Karen Townley; his sister, Marlene Kautz; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Catherine Hicks; step-son, Richard “Butch” Sihtala Jr.; his parents, Walter and Lydia Keto; his sister, Mary Helsten; and his brothers, John Keto and Ralph Keto.

A private family graveside service will be held at Ishpeming Cemetery.
