Obituary

Ishpeming- Gary "Surf" Jerome Guibord, age 76, life-long resident of Ishpeming and recent resident of Marquette's Jacobetti Home for Veterans, peacefully passed away surrounded by family, on August 21, 2024. Gary was born August 13, 1948, in Marquette, Michigan the son of Jerome and Shirley (Coole) Guibord.

He was a graduate of Ishpeming High School Class of 1967.  During his high school years, he was a member of two popular bands, the "Sting Rays" and later "Little John and the Sherwood Men". The bands entertained locally and at the Youth Centers in the area.

After graduation Surf was drafted in to the Army and spent most of his years of service in Vietnam.  He was a life-long member of the Vietnam Vets Chapter 380 and was proud to be in the color guard marching in many parades.  Surf was honorably discharged.

Following his military service Surf worked for Wisconsin Bearing Company of Ishpeming until retirement.

He loved slow pitch softball where he was a "hell-of-a" pitcher, known for dropping pitches from the sky for Hickey's Bar.

Surf was a Harley guy.  He enjoyed many years and miles of riding with the Hog Chapter and countless buddies.  He was especially fond of the wild times spent in Sturgis and at Bike Week down in Daytona.

Surf was a dedicated member of AA for 40+ years and deeply cherished the relationships formed through that organization.  He was always willing to help others navigate difficult times with unbiased listening and hard-earned wisdom.

Surf is preceded in death by parents Shirley and Jerome; and step-father William Mayotte.  He is survived by his "Pride and Joy" daughter, Aubree (Bianco-Guibord) Mannering, and husband Austin of Green Bay; his sister Yvonne Nurmi and husband Wayne of Ishpeming; his niece Susan (Nurmi) Nickel and sons, John and Ryan of Suamico, WI; his nephew Michael Nurmi and wife Christine and children Mattie, Niila, and Caeden. Also surviving are his step-sister Rose Anderson and family of Chassell, MI; and step-brother Bill Mayotte and his family of Georgia.

A celebration of life and visitation period will be held on Tuesday August 27, 2024 from 3:00pm until 5:00pm at the Ishpeming Elks where coffee and sweets will be served throughout. Military Honors will be accorded at 5:00pm by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380.

Aubree and Family would like to thank the unbelievably kind and talented staffs of the UP Health System-Marquette and Jacobetti Veteran's Home.  Their wonderful and compassionate care of Surf is so deeply appreciated.
