Ishpeming- Gary F. Betts, age 74 of 801 N. 1st St. Ishpeming, passed away on Wednesday, August 08, 2012 at his home while under the loving care of his family and Lake Superior Hospice.

Gary was born on October 23, 1937 in Ishpeming to Francis & Eileen (DeVold) Betts. He graduated from Ishpeming High School, class of 1955 and received his Bachelors Degree from Northern Michigan University. Gary taught social studies for 35 years at North Lake School and National Mine School where he retired from in 1995. He later worked at Household Appliance in Ishpeming.

Gary was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Ishpeming ELKS Lodge #447 where he was past Exalted Ruler. Gary enjoyed watching his grandchildren in their activities, taking walks and reading. Gary will be missed by his canine companion "Bear".

Gary is survived by his wife, Dianne (Juidici) Betts, whom he married on July 30, 1966, 2 daughters: Jodi (John Korpi) Croley of Ishpeming and Jennifer (Mark) Bratonia of DePere, WI, 5 grandchildren: Taylor, Gabby and Christopher "Bubba" Croley, Mason & Jackson Bratonia, a brother Bob (JoAnn) Betts of Ishpeming, a niece Laurie (Scott) Skytta of Ishpeming and Shawn (Heather) Betts of White Bear Lake, MN, along with 2 great nieces, 3 great nephews and a great great niece. Gary was preceded in death by his parents Francis and Eileen.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 noon on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. James Challancin officiating.

The family will greet friends and relatives at St. Joseph Church on Saturday from 10:00am until the time of service at Noon.
