Humboldt Twp.- Frederick Paul Mattila, age 76, of Humboldt Twp. passed away on Saturday, May 8, 2021 at Spectrum Health-Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI.
Frederick was born at the family home in Humboldt Twp., on February 17, 1945, a son of the late William A. and Helvi E. (Lakanen) Mattila.
Fred graduated from Republic High School. He worked for CCI at the Mather B, Republic and Empire Mines where he retired from in 1988 as a shovel operator.
Fred enjoyed tinkering with his tractors, farming, working, and spending time in the outdoors, especially at camp. He also enjoyed traveling and visiting family around the country and in Finland.
Fred is survived by his wife Judith, whom he married on September 6, 1994, 5 sons; Don Mattila, of Humboldt, Mark (Marisa) Mattila, of Humboldt, Erik Mattila, of Ypsilanti, MI; Jeremy Mattila, of Chaska, MN; Eli (Amanda) Mattila, of Ypsilanti, MI; a step daughter, Korinna (Mike) Rafferty, two step sons; Kevin (Michelle) VandyBogurt, and Nicholas (Amy) VandyBogurt, of Tekonsha, MI; a brother Eli (Shirlee) Mattila of Silverdale, WA, 19 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, 7 sisters; Helga Mattila, Agnes Warner, Ruth Puroll, Helen Feigl, Elma Laughlin, Martha Hill and Laura Sloney, and 9 brothers; Reino, Raymond, Sulo, William, George, Francis, Charles, David, and Ronald Mattila.
Fred's family will greet relatives and friends on Sunday, May 16, 2:00 – 4:00 pm at the Bjork and Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming.
