Republic- Francis K. "Della" Mattila, age 57 Republic resident passed away Sunday, November 29, 2009 at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient for two days.

Francis was born at Twin Cities Hospital in Negaunee, Michigan on July 20, 1952, the youngest child of William A. & Helvi E. (Lakanen) Mattila. He graduated from Republic-Michigamme High School.

Della worked in many areas of the United States including California, Minnesota, & Wisconsin as a carpenter apprentice, a welder and piper fitter, residing in Little Chute, WI about 20 years before retiring and returning to Republic in 2007.

Della is survived by four brothers: Eli (Shirlee) of Silverdale, WA; Ronald (Susan) of Negaunee, MI; Frederick (Judy), & David (Wanda) of Champion, MI; two sisters: Laura Sloney of Rialto, CA & Martha Hill of Chassell, MI and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters: Hilga, Elma, Helen, Agnes, & Ruth: six brothers: William J., George, Sulo, Reino, Raymond & Charles.

A memorial service will be held 2:00pm Thursday, December 3, 2009 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. Katherine Finegan officiating. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 1:00pm until the time of service.
