Ishpeming- Francis Kenneth Gleason, age 97, of 705 N 1st Street Ishpeming, MI passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at his home with his daughter and son in law at his side and under the care of UP Home Health and Hospice.
Francis was born in Negaunee, Michigan, son of Matt and Eva (Bean) Gleason on April 15, 1914. He was very proud of his accomplishments and graduated from Negaunee high School class of 1933. He was the areas first Eagle Scout and scout leader for 20 years of troop number 325 in the Ishpeming-Negaunee area. He played hard ball in the city league in the 1940's. He was well known in the sport of boxing and he coached Golden Glove Boxing in the 1950's. He worked for Cleveland Cliffs for over 30 years working at Cliffs Shaft.
Kenny enjoyed spending time at his Little Dead hunting camp where he would fish and garden. He was also very well known for his great stories. He enjoyed being with his family, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren at the Big Dead Basin camp.
Francis is survived by his daughter Barbara (Dominic) Nardi, 6 grandchildren Chris (Al) Mingori, Judy (Steve) VanErem, Mike (Sheryl) Nardi, Don Nardi, Barb (Mike) Dellangelo, Suzie (Justin) Richards, 16 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren, 1 brother Robert (Bibs) Gleason, 2 sisters Helen Schiliz from Ohio and Eva Gulas from Washington, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Kenny was preceded in death by his wife Elsie (Maronen) Gleason in May 1988, 3 brothers Edward, Joseph and Tom, and 3 sisters: Marie Mezza, Mildred Kangas and Joyce Severs.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00am Saturday, December 17 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ishpeming with Fr. Greg Heikkala officiating.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday at St. Johns Catholic Church from 9:30AM until the time of service at 11:00AM.
Pallbearers will be grandchildren: Mike and Don Nardi and great grandchildren: Gabe and Luke Nardi, Josh Johnson, Allen and Matt Mingori, Tony and Jake Dellangelo.
Memorial considerations may be directed to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church Memorial Fund in memory of Francis "Kenny" Gleason.
