NEGAUNEE, MI - Frances (Nault) Sharland, 89, of Negaunee, Michigan, was born on April 27, 1937, and passed on September 1, 2026. She was born and raised in Ishpeming, Michigan by her parents Virginia “Merle” (Roberts) Nault and Frederick Nault.

As a child, she enjoyed skiing at Al Quaal Winter Sports, helping her grandmother in the garden, and was an avid reader. She had two sisters, Michele (Nault) Haller, and Marsha (Nault) Fleck.

She met her husband, Robert Sharland, in Ishpeming and married in 1959. They lived in Bangor, Maine, Battle Creek and Kalamazoo, Michigan as well as Duluth and Virginia, Minnesota and Cleveland, Ohio as they grew their family. They eventually settled back home in Ishpeming to be near family and retired to Negaunee.

Fran graduated from Northern Michigan University and held a master’s degree in Home Sciences. She followed in her favorite aunt and mentor’s footsteps; teaching at Ishpeming High School in the same classroom. She also spent time teaching at her college alma mater.

Fran loved crafting and sewing with cheerful fabrics. She often made doll clothes and soft snugglies for her grand and great grandchildren. In her younger years, she was an avid antique collector, living for the great find to her and friend’s collections.

Her Birthday and Book club friends were very special. She also enjoyed being a part of AAUW, BPA-Women’s Association, PEO, and Red Hats as well as Friends of the Library. Giving back to the community was important, she was a thoughtful brownie and scout leader as well as a CCD teacher and Eucharistic minister.

Fran is survived by her three children; Suzanne (Sharland) (Kevin) Hemmila, of Negaunee, Michigan, Michael (Anne) Sharland, of Concord, California, and Mary (Sharland) Saviski, of Hinsdale, Illinois. She is also loved by her grandchildren Thomas, Jennifer, Clayton, and Will and her new great-grandson, Lorenzo.

Join the family at a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Paul Catholic Church in Negaunee on Friday, September 25, 2026. Visitation will begin at 10:00am and go until the time of Mass at 11:00am with Fr. Larry Van Damme as celebrant. A luncheon will take place immediately following the Mass at the Upper Peninsula Brewing Company in Negaunee, MI.

Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United Way of Marquette County or the Community Foundation of Marquette County in Frances’ memory.
