Obituary
Ishpeming – Fern M. Sundberg, age 93, of 742 Elliott Ave., Ishpeming passed away on Sunday June 8, 2008 at her home in Ishpeming.
Fern was born July 5, 1914 in Crystal Falls, MI the daughter of the late Henry and Signe (Erickson) Johnson. She spent her early childhood in Crystal Falls, moving with her family to Imperial Heights in her early elementary years. At age nine she moved again with her family to Pequaming, where she resided through her school years, graduating in 1932 from the L'Anse High School. Shortly after her high school graduation she moved to Ishpeming where she had resided since.
Fern was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming where she had been active in many activities, including the Patience Circle and the Ladies Quilting Group. Fern always loved the beauty of nature, and the natural surroundings of Lake Superior. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking and baking, along with playing bridge with her lady friends. She had been a member of the Wawonowin Country Club where she had participated in the Ladies Golf League. Fern and Byron enjoyed traveling, and it was then they enjoyed the companionship of golf together.
Survivors include two daughters – Marilyn (John) Pontti of Ishpeming and Joan Sundberg of St. Paul, MN; a son Paul Sundberg of Ishpeming; a brother Glen (EvAnn) Johnson of Marquette; a sister-in-law Myrtis Johnson of Minneapolis, MN; 3 grandchildren – Mark (Peggy) Pontti of Iron Mountain, Todd Pontti of Monterey, CA and Jill (David) Simula of ElDorado Hills, CA; 5 great grandchildren – Meredith, Alyssa and Emma Pontti & Jordan and Noah Simula, along with several nieces and nephews. Since 1993, following the death of her husband, Fern enjoyed her canine companion, "Tzu Tzu" She was preceded in death by her husband Byron Sundberg in 1992, a sister Audrey Dixon and a brother Orrin Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday June 12, 2008 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming with the Rev. Warren Geier to officiate.
Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
The family will greet friends and relatives from 10:00am until the time of services on Thursday at the church.
Memorials may be directed to the Bethany Lutheran Church or a charity of one's choice in Fern's memory.
