Denver, CO – Eric W. Mathias, age 27, former Ishpeming resident passed away suddenly on Thursday, January 11, 2018 of an apparent heart attack at his home in Denver.

Eric was born on April 12, 1990 in Ishpeming to William and Kathy (Magnuson) Mathias. He was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 2008 and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Northern Michigan University in Psychology. Eric had currently been working for a branch of FedEx out of the Denver, CO area and prior to moving to Colorado, Eric had been employed by the United States Postal Service for 4½ years.

Eric was a quiet studious person who always had his nose in a book or was found researching topics of interest on the computer. His goal was to go back to school for his Master's degree. In his earlier years, Eric was an avid tennis player, and also participated in baseball and basketball. Eric was a devoted Philadelphia Eagle and University of Michigan fan and didn't miss a game. He enjoyed listening to music, was a real film buff and had an affection for cats.

Survivors include his parents William and Kathy Mathias of Ishpeming, sister Jennifer (Shawn) Hodgins of Ishpeming, maternal grandfather Douglas Magnuson of Ishpeming, uncle and aunt Steven and Terri (Anderson) Magnuson of Lakewood, CO, special cousins – Krista and Casey Magnuson of CA, Diane and Joe Montella of St. Joseph, MI, John, Mel and Genevieve Lola of Onalaska, WI and Lynn, Drew and Grant Gustafson of Waterford, MI, Godparents Barbara and Ross Carlson of Ishpeming. Eric was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother Jean Magnuson and his paternal grandmother Jean Mathias.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 2:00 – 4:00PM on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming where a memorial service will follow at 4:00PM with the Rev. JJ Mannschreck to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery. A reception and dinner will follow the services in the church hall.
