Ishpeming - Ida E. "Emily" Torma, age 96, longtime Ishpeming resident, passed away on Thursday, May 13, 2021 at the Teal Lake Senior Living Community in Negaunee, while under the loving care of her family and U.P. Home Health and Hospice.
Emily was born in Ishpeming on March 7, 1925, a daughter of the late Ida (Pasanen) and Seth Oja. She moved to Long Island, NY early in her childhood, graduating from High School and then attending Nursing School in Kingston, NY, graduating as valedictorian from Augustana Nursing School. She received her nurses training at Bellevue Hospital in New York. Emily moved to Ishpeming in 1946, working as a Registered Nurse at Bell Hospital in Ishpeming, St. Mary's in Marquette and for the medical practices of Dr Rosenbaum, Dr. Tobin and Dr. Narotzky. Patients who knew her thought she was the best nurse ever and was often complimented for administering the best shots.
Emily was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, where she had served with the Bethel Social Ministry, and taught Sunday School. She had also been a Girl Scout Leader, did volunteer work at Bell Hospital with the Ladies auxiliary. Pastimes included reading, baking and doing handwork. Emily cherished following along with her grandchildren's and great grandchildren's achievements and accomplishments.
Survivors include three daughters - Jeanne Torma of Minneapolis, MN; Nancy (Chuck) Johnson of Brooklyn Park, MN; and Marilyn (Bud) Hart of Ishpeming; grandchildren - Hayley (Tim) Neu, Jordan (Taylor) Hart, Jeff (Lauren) Hart, Kevin (Jill) Hart, Netrea (Gary) Miklowski; great grandchildren - Alec and Eli Neu, Jace and Rya Hart, Kyra and Ty Miklowski, Summyr Davis, Willie Stanifer, her feline friend Cuddles.
She was preceded in death by her husband Roy in 2005; and a sister Elaine Oja.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00am – 12:00pm on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at the Bethel Lutheran Church. Funeral services will follow at 12:00pm on Wednesday at Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery at a later date.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, those attending are required to wear a mask and adhere to the social distancing guidelines.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Bethel Lutheran Church, Social Ministry fund, 333 E. Ridge St., Ishpeming, MI 49849 in Emily's memory.
