Republic - Elvi E. Heikkila, age 92, of 7467 Hardwood Road, Republic passed away on Thursday August 11, 2016 at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming Twp. while in the loving care of her family, staff members at the Mather Nursing Center and the Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice.

Elvi was born May 16, 1924 in Republic the daughter of the late John and Tyyne (Hakala) Heikkila and was a lifelong Republic resident. Elvi had worked as a nurses aid at the Serepta Nursing Home in Republic for several years. She had also worked as a caregiver / babysitter for area families.

Elvi was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic. She enjoyed carpet making, knitting and crocheting, gardening and cooking for her brothers Reino and William, whom she resided with.

Survivors include 3 brothers – Reino and William Heikkila both of Republic, and Alvar (Marina) Heikkila of Ishpeming, a nephew John (Heidi) Heikkila of Ishpeming, great nieces – Stephanie and Natalie along with several cousins. Elvi was preceded in death by her parents and a brother George Heikkila.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00am – 11:00am on Friday August 19, 2016 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic where a memorial service will follow at 11:00am with the Rev. Kevin Kaiser to officiate. Interment will take place at the Republic Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the services in the church hall.
