Ishpeming- Elsie E. (Hannuksela) Hooper, 111 Bluff St. Apt 511, passed away at 5:30 pm on
Thursday August 12, 20 10, at the Mather Nursing Home, where she had been a resident
for the past six weeks. Elsie was born in Diorite, Michigan, to Isaac and Maria
Hannuksela, on August 7, 1924, and with the exception of a few years in Gogebic and
Ontonagon Counties in the 40's and 50's, lived her entire life in the Ishpeming area.
During her last decade she enjoyed residing at the Ishpeming "High Rise". She recently
celebrated her 86th birthday with family and friends.
Raised in Diorite in a large family, she bypassed the first grade as an exceptional student
and graduated from Ishpeming High School in 1941 at the age of 16. A life member of
the IHS Alumni Association, she treasured monthly lunches with her former classmates.
She married Lloyd A. Hooper on September 19, 1942. Together, they had five children:
Katherine Kososki of Humboldt, Sandra (Chuck) Berra of Fenton, MI, Linda (Bill)
L'Huillier of Green Bay, WI, Dr. Lloyd (Gail) Hooper of Ishpeming, and Dr. Larry (Lyn)
Hooper of Bartonville, IL.
Elsie was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. She voluntarily
prepared the Bethel Evangel for many years, served on the Social Ministry Committee,
worked with the quilting group and sewed schoolbags for missions overseas.
Her hobbies included knitting, sewing and working crossword puzzles. During her earlier
years, she was active in the PTA and served as a Cub Scout den mother. She took great
pride in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her five children, a special niece, Jane (John) Webb, twelve
grandchildren, Julie Ford and Steve Berra, Bill L'Huillier and Tammy Priewe, Eric and
Kirk Hooper, Justin, Jenna, Kiara, Cassandra, Jacob Hooper and John Lagrisola. She is
also survived by two great grandchildren, Ashlyn Berra and Anthony Ford, and several
other nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, a granddaughter, Laura Kososki, her
parents, four brothers (George, Reino, Jacob and Frederick) and five sisters (Alma
Hannuksela, Elizabeth Peterson, Hilda Campbell, Evelyn Niemi, and Martha McGregor).
Visitation will be at Bethel Lutheran Church from 3:00-5:00 pm on Sunday August 15, 2010,
with the funeral to be held at 5:00 pm and lunch to follow. Pallbearers will be her
six grandsons, John Webb and John Webb Jr. Pastor Lauri Maki will officiate with
interment to be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the Bethel Lutheran Church Van Fund or Social Ministry
Fund at Elsie's request.

Elsie's children and grandchildren have been supplied with an ample supply of tossuts
because of her capable hands. These slippers and many hand-knitted afghans were her
special way of showing love for her family.
