Obituary

Ishpeming – Edward W. Sandberg, age 84, of 230 Prospect St., Ishpeming passed away on Friday Dec. 13, 2013 at his home while in the loving care of his family and the Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice. Edward was born September 1, 1929 in Negaunee the son of the late Walter and Rosena (Mager) Sandberg. Edward attended the Negaunee Schools and had worked for the L.S. & I. Railroad prior to serving in the United States Army stateside during the Korean War from March of 1953 through March of 1955. Upon his return to this area Edward was again employed at L.S. & I, a career which spanned 42½ years. He retired in 1991 as gang foreman. Edward had married Edith Korpi on Sept. 5, 1953. Edward loved his vegetable and flower gardens in the summer months, along with keeping his grass meticulously cut. In the winter months he was happy to see it snow so he could shovel and run the snow-blower. Ed enjoyed ski-jumping and playing baseball during his school years. He had been an avid hunter and fisherman, and also loved to go for rides on his Indian Motorcycle. In more recent years he and Edith enjoyed stopping at the casino and traveling around the country with Ron and Naoma Korpi. Edward was a fixture at his children's and grandchildren's activities and events. Ed was a member of the Riverside Club in West Ishpeming for 57 years along with its Horseshoe League Team. He also enjoyed bowling and participated in the Monday Night Industrial League in Ishpeming. Edward is survived by his wife Edith Sandberg of Ishpeming, 3 children, sons – Edward A. (Anita) Sandberg of Ishpeming, John M. (Tammy) Sandberg of Champion, and daughter Janice (Steven) Fredrickson all of Ishpeming, 6 grandchildren – Zachary (Kristin Granlund) Sandberg, Lindsey (Carl) Powers, Cassy Sandberg, Ashley (James) Bourgeois, Abby Fredrickson and Brett Fredrickson, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant granddaughter Tammy Sandberg, and 3 sisters – Mildred Sipola, Dorothy Pearson and Shirley Taylor. The family will greet relatives and friends from 12:00noon – 2:00pm on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming, a memorial service will follow at 2:00pm on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Inurnment will take place at the Negaunee Cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the Bethel Lutheran Church hall.
