Ishpeming – Edward H. "Ned" Johns, age 87, of 223 W. Ridge St., Ishpeming, passed away on Friday, May 26, 2017 at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, where he had resided since August of 2016.
Ned was born July 3, 1929 in Ishpeming the son of the late Edward and Frances (Hilton) Johns. He grew up in Ishpeming and graduated from the Ishpeming High School with the class of 1947. Ned went on to attend Northern Michigan University where he received a bachelor degree in economics. He then served in the United States Army, stateside during the Korean War in counter intelligence.
Ned's working career began at the E A Johnson Grocery Store n Ishpeming, he moved on to work for CCI and then the Social Security Administration for 31 years. While with the SSA he had worked in Milwaukee, Madison, Chicago and was the Manager at the Marquette Office prior to his retirement.
Ned was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming, the Ishpeming Senior Kiwanis Club, The Ishpeming Elks and the Ishpeming American Legion. Ned was proud to have served on the Ishpeming School Board for 12 years. Ned's favorite pastime was bowling.
Survivors include his wife, whom he married August 7, 1954, Jean Johns of Ishpeming, 2 daughters – Karen (Peter Jorgensen) Johns of San Marcos, CA and Kathy (Mike) Harrington of Ishpeming, daughter-in-law – Janine Johns of Negaunee, 4 grandchildren – Joelle Johns, Katie Johns, Mindy Harrington and Kara (fiancé Nate Clisch) Harrington, 2 sisters – Helen (Edward) Smith of Waupaca, WI, Edith Peddle of Jupiter, FL, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. Ned was preceded in death by his son Alan in 2008, his parent and in-laws, along with a brother-in-law William Peddle and a sister-in-law Marilyn Dorsey
A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming with the Rev. Warren Geier to officiate. The family will greet relatives and friends following the services in the church hall where a light luncheon will be served.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Bethany Lutheran Church, 715 Mather Ave., Ishpeming, MI 49489 or the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans (Memory Care Unit) at 425 Fisher St., Marquette, Mi 49855.
