Obituary

National Mine – Edlund "Jug" Ostola, age 74 of 175 Co. Rd. PDJ in National Mine passed away on Friday March 4, 2011 at the Bell Hospital in Ishpeming. He had been in ill health and had spent three months during 2010 recovering at the Marquette Co. Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming.


Edlund was born Oct. 7, 1936 in Ishpeming the son of the late William and Martha (Kytosaari) Ostola. He attended the National Mine School and was a lifelong area resident. Jug started his career as a pipefitter at age 19 and that continued until 1996 when he was forced to retire do to his health. While with the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union, Local #414 and Local #111, he worked on many construction projects throughout Northern Michigan and Wisconsin.


Being a master welder, Jug was known to make some of the best sauna stoves for family and friends. He enjoyed his time spent with his grandchildren Tyler and Layne. Some of his favorite hobbies included time spent at camp, fishing, gardening, playing the guitar and accordion. Jug also enjoyed mechanics and would rebuild motors and engines for people who would always say he did the best work.


Survivors include his wife of 22 years Sandy Ostola of National Mine, two sons – Walter Mannikko of National Mine, and John Mannikko of Iron Mountain, two daughters – Marlo (Larry) Barnett of Green Bay and Niccole Mannikko of National Mine; two grandchildren Tyler and Layne Barnett, two brothers – Ensio (Marie) Ostola of Ishpeming and Eugene Ostola of New Port Richey, FL, two sisters – Esther Morcom of Ishpeming and Eileen Laitinen-Brooks of Ishpeming, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Ellen Hill.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 1:00 until 4:00pm on Tuesday March 8, 2011 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 4:00pm at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. John Roy of the Good News Assembly of God to officiate. A luncheon will follow the services at the Faith Lutheran Church located on Co. Rd. 518 south of Ishpeming.
