Three Lakes – Edith V. Koski, a longtime resident of 24793 Northwood Drive in Spurr Twp. passed away on Friday September 23, 2011 in the wonderful care of the Marquette Co. Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming. Edith, age 88, had resided there since July of 2009.
Edith was born January 14, 1923 in Painesdale, Michigan, the daughter of the late William and Maria (Lepsu) Niemela. She graduated from Painesdale High School and received an associate degree from Suomi College. She resided in Three Lakes since 1950 until entering the care of MCMCF.
Edith and Rudolph Koski were wed on February 25, 1944 in Abilene Texas. Shortly thereafter Rudy was shipped overseas to fight in World War II. During that time Edith began working in Detroit as a stenographer and also worked in an airplane factory.
Edith served as a trustee on the Spurr Township Board for many years. Edith and her husband devoted their lives to their work, children, grandchildren, and church. She and Rudy spent much of their lives at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Champion tending the lawns and gardens, teaching Sunday School, working pasty sales, and serving on the alter guild. Edith was an organist for 30 years at Our Redeemer. Beyond this devotion she spent her days reading, working on crossword puzzles, gardening, and searching for agates by the family camp at Agate Beach. Saunaing was a ritual on Saturday nights in Edith's household, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her much joy in her years.
Edith is survived by 5 children: Peggy (Stanley) Steele of Three Lakes, Richard (Karen) Koski of Imperial Heights, Jon (Linda) Koski of Michigamme, David (Lisa) Koski of Three Lakes and Fred Koski of Three Lakes, 2 sisters Inez (George) Hendrickson of Gwinn and Kathryn Wiitanen of Laurium, 15 grandchildren: Jon (Kristina) Koski, Lori (Lawrence) Dodge, Theresa Koski, Daniel (Darci) Koski, Jennifer Koski, Jeremy (Amy) Steele, Joseph Steele, Michael Steele, Christopher Steele, Tanya (Jason) Masarah, Jessica Koski, Matthew Koski, Melissa Swanson, Chad Swanson, Robert Swanson, and Brad Swanson, great grandchildren: Alayna, Derrick, Steven, Ciara, Rylee, Dylan & Trey Koski, Lucas Forrest, Isabelle Masarah, Aiden and Landon Steele, Brei Swanson along with numerous nieces and nephews. Edith was preceded in death by her husband Rudolph, a granddaughter Julie Koski and 3 sisters.
Funeral services will be held 1:00PM Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Champion with Carole Neitzel officiating, The family will greet relatives and friends on Tuesday at the church from 11:00 am until the time of service at 1:00 pm.
Pallbearers will be Edith's grandchildren.
