Ishpeming/Negaunee- E. Leonard DeWitt, age 86, longtime area resident, passed away on Tuesday November 2, 2021 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility while in the loving care of his family, and nursing home staff.
Leonard was born on October 10, 1935 in Dearborn, MI, son of the late William and Ada (Jefferson) DeWitt. He was a graduate of Allen Park High School class of 1953. Leonard worked as a switchman for Michigan Bell Telephone for many years. He went back to college later in life and graduated from NMU with a bachelor's degree in 1997.
Leonard was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Ishpeming. An active member of AA since June 2 nd of 1962. He was also a member of the Wawonowin Country Club, and a life member of the Allen Park Masonic Lodge. He was in the Blue Notes Parents Club and will fondly be remembered as the voice of "Go Go Big Blue!" whenever the Blue Notes took the field. Leonard loved to golf, play euchre, and poker with the guys.
Leonard is survived by 4 children: Patrick (Becky) DeWitt, Paula (Stephen) Strom, Julia (Greg Elmquist) Kangas, and William (Jennifer) DeWitt, 11 grandchildren: Nathan (Amy Moyle) DeWitt, Matthew (JoeLa) DeWitt, Luke DeWitt, Taylor (Cody Chartier) DeWitt, Allison Strom, Elizabeth (Grant) Kinney, William (Sarah) Kangas Jr., Angela Kangas, Phillip Kangas, Sebastian DeWitt, Nathanael DeWitt, 8 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 66 years Phyllis DeWitt, sister: Helen Smith, and brothers: William and Wesley DeWitt.
Leonard's family will greet relatives and friends on Wednesday November 10, 2021 at the Grace Episcopal Church in Ishpeming from 11:00am until 1:00pm. A Memorial service will follow at 1:00pm with Rev. Virginia Graybill officiating. Following the service burial will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Negaunee.
