Ishpeming – Duane K. Doney, age 82, of 762 Michigan St., Ishpeming, passed away at 3:59am on Friday, November 25, 2016 at the Marquette Co. Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming while in the loving care of his family.

Duane was born June 9, 1934 in Ishpeming the only child of the late Lloyd and Viola (Hoiem) Doney. He was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1952. Duane served in the United States Army during the Korean War, having been stationed in the U.S. Territory of Alaska at Fort Richardson. Following his service time he returned to Ishpeming and was employed by the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. as a Certified Welder mainly at the Eagle Mills Plant and later became a Shift Supervisor of maintenance at the Empire Mine. Duane retired in 1992 after 39 years with Cliffs.

He was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church where he had been active in the Chancel Choir and had served on the church council and the worship and music committee. He was an avid Chicago Bears fan. Duane enjoyed tending to his yard in the summer months and was often referred to as the lawn enforcement officer. He also kept his driveway scraped during the long winter months. He loved spending time at camp and was an enthusiastic hunter during deer season along with duck and goose seasons. During his retirement years Duane became the family dog sitter and was also known by the neighborhood dogs for the treats he would hand out when on his bike rides.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 60 years Ruth (Wirtala) Doney of Ishpeming, his 4 children – Daniel (Kathy Jo) Doney, Judy (Fred) Saari, Liz (Robbie) Powelson and Eric (Tamara) Doney all of Ishpeming, 6 grandchildren – Jason (Jaimie) Doney, Danielle (Brian) Anderson, Rebecca (Matt) Clisch, Victoria (Tony Dishaw) Powelson, Brittany Doney and Libbie Doney, 4 great grandchildren – Kaylin and Eliisa Doney and Nora Jo and Barrett Anderson along with numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his faithful canine friend Jay.

Duane's family will greet relatives and friends on Monday November 28, 2016 from 10:00am – 12:00noon at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming where funeral services will follow at 12:00 noon with Rev. Lauri O. Maki officiating. Military Honors will be accoreded by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380 at the conclussion of the services. Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.

Memorials may be directed to either the Bethel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or Parking Lot Fund in Duane's memory.
