Ishpeming – Douglas Evans, age 90, longtime Negaunee and Ishpeming resident passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at the Marquette Co. Medical Care facility in Ishpeming where he had resided since May of 2011. Douglas was born April 18, 1922 in St. Austell, England the son of the late Percival C. and Elsie Evans. The family immigrated to America when Doug was a child, finding work in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Douglas became a United States citizen and graduated from the Negaunee High School in 1941. He then attended Northern Michigan University in the Carpentry and Pattern Design program. Douglas went on to serve in the United States Navy during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific as a gunner aboard the destroyer USS Hadley. Doug returned to this area following the War and worked at the Tracy Mine in Negaunee for some years prior to moving to the Detroit area for work as a fireman. He again returned in the mid 50's this time finding work at the K.I. Sawyer Air Base as a civil service fire inspector. He worked his way up to Assistant Chief of Technical Services retiring in 1985. Douglas was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, especially deer season, fishing, mainly for steelhead. Summers spent at camp of Arflin Lake, playing baseball and softball, throwing horseshoes along with watching the Tigers or the Lions were all pastimes of Doug's. During his retirement years he wintered in Bonita Springs, FL. Douglas is survived by three sons – Dennis (Joyce) Evans of Ishpeming, Don (Linda) Evans of Tomahawk, WI and Gary (Claudette) Evans of Negaunee, a son-in-law Ken Nelson of Ishpeming, a sister Barbara (Edward) Wheeler of Negaunee, 14 grandchildren, along with numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his 1st wife Dorothy, his second wife Gail, a daughter Kay Nelson and a brother Percy Evans. Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at the Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate with Military Honors to be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380. Interment will take place at the Negaunee Cemetery.
