Dorothy was born January 8, 1945 in Diorite Location, the daughter of the late Ewald and Lempi (Pelto) Hytinen. As a youngster near age 10, she prevented a train from derailing in the Diorite Location by flagging it down prior to it reaching the tracks that would have derailed it, which made headlines in the local newspaper the following day. Dorothy was a graduate of the National Mine High School, Class of 1963. She had worked as a nurse's aide in Palmer prior to moving to Chicago around 1967, where she had also worked as a nurse's aide. Dorothy moved back to this area in 1972, and has resided here since.

She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, and was involved with the Ishpeming Salvation Army Home League. She enjoyed camping, fishing, blueberry picking, and going out for Friday Fish Fry followed by a sauna at camp in the summer months. In the winter months cross country skiing and snowmobiling were favorite activities of Dorothy's. Her pets "Smokey" the cat and "Dare" the dog held a special place in Dorothy's heart.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 31 years, Mike Harvala of Ishpeming, 3 sons – George Ermis of Staten Island, NY, James Homola and his fiancee' Penny Barry of Ishpeming and Edward (Carisa) Homola of Ishpeming; a brother John (Diane) Hytinen of Ishpeming, 4 grandchildren – Ashley, Ethan, Maija and Ellie Homola all of Ishpeming, along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother Walter Aho, 3 sisters – Shirley Kemp, Sylvia Prophet, and Mildred Kokkila, and her former husband James Homola.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday August 11, 2007 at the Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
