Ishpeming- Donald R. Stanaway, age 74, longtime Ishpeming and Negaunee area resident, passed away on Monday August 21, 2023 at his home, while in the loving care of his family.
Donald was born on October 10, 1948 in Negaunee at the Twin City Hospital, son of the late Mervyn and Ruth (Hautamaki) Stanaway. He attended West Ishpeming Schools while growing up, where he was very active in little league, babe ruth, boy scouts, and church youth choir before moving to Negaunee where he attended Negaunee High School. Donald later joined the United States Marines, following his service he moved around the Midwest and Utah where he drove truck and worked as a machinist for several years. Donald and his family then moved back to the Ishpeming/Negaunee area to raise their children. He worked various construction jobs upon returning to the UP, finishing his career off at Pellstar as a supervisor.
Donald enjoyed playing baseball and softball his entire life, playing in leagues in Illinois, Ishpeming, and Negaunee, and also enjoyed being a little league coach. He enjoyed going to NASCAR races in Michigan and at Bristol, and was fortunate to be able to see three Indy 500's and four Milwaukee Miles. Donald played in the Ishpeming and Negaunee Cribbage, horseshoe, and pool leagues. He was a member of the Greenwood American Legion Post 114.
Donald is survived by his wife Rosemary (Westman) Stanaway whom he married on November 3rd, 1973 just shy of their 50th wedding anniversary, 3 children- Terry (Brandy) Stanaway of Spokane, WA, Sondra (Randy) Couture of Negaunee, Sheryl Stanaway of Ishpeming, 2 sons from his previous marriage- Donald Jr. Stanaway of Gwinn, Richard Stanaway of Gwinn, 3 siblings- Butch Stanaway of Negaunee, Brian Stanaway of Ishpeming, Patricia Seppala of Ishpeming, 4 brothers and sisters-in-law- Lois Westman, Wanda Westman, David Westman, William (Liisa) Westman all of Ishpeming, 11 grandchildren- Cory, Devin, Taylor, Mary Margaret, Allissa, Sean, Erin, Colby, Jamey, Dylan, Shane, 4 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers- Ken, Ray, and David Stanaway, brother-in-law- Matt Seppala, and mother and father-in-law- Roy and MaryJane Westman.
Donald's family will greet relatives and friends at the Bjork and Zhulkie Funeral Home on Friday August 25, 2023 from 10:00am until 11:00am. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am with Donald's sister-in-law Lois Westman officiating. Interment will follow in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
