Negaunee- Donald Fred Skytta, age 95, passed away Wednesday, October 7, 2020, at Teal Lake Senior Living Community in Negaunee.
Donald was born in Spurr Twp., Michigan on October 30, 1924, a son of the late Fred and Sophie (Koski) Skytta.
Don attended Spurr Twp. School, thru the 8th grade, and graduated from Michigamme High School, class of 1942. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Don worked for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company for 30 plus years retiring in 1982 from the Tilden Mine as a Shift Foreman.
Don was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Champion and the Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of Michigan. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons, grandsons, and brothers, and was an avid Detroit Lions fan. He enjoyed the company of his family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Donald is survived by a son, Dennis (Carla) Skytta, of Michigamme; a brother Raymond (Susan) Skytta of Flint, stepdaughters, Lynn (Bruce) Sprangers, of Brookfield, WI, and Arlene Kemppainen, of L'Anse, MI; stepsons Michael (Sue) Salo, of Bradenton, FL; Curtis (Melony) Skytta, of Humboldt; son-in-law Pete Starkey of Michigamme, along with several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Sophie Skytta, 2nd wife Betty, 3rd wife Frances, a son Albert Skytta, daughter Cathy Starkey, sister Karen Williams, brothers, Arnold and Douglas Skytta, stepson Darryl Skytta, and step daughter Nancy Haanpaa.
Due to current restriction with the COVID-19 pandemic, a private funeral service will be held at Our Redeem Lutheran Church in Champion with Paul Peterson officiating.
Interment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens, where military honors will be accorded by U.S. Navy.
Memorial considerations may be directed to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church or a charity of one's choice in memory of Donald Skytta.
The family would like to thank the staff, especially Snowball at Teal Lake Senior Living for the excellent care given to Don.
