Negaunee/Gaylord, MI- Donald W. Sandberg, age 87 of 84 Grimes Rd. Negaunee and longtime resident of Gaylord, passed away Tuesday January 20, 2015 at his daughter's home in the loving comfort of his family and UP Home Health & Hospice.

Donald was born November 7, 1927 in Negaunee to Wilfred J. & Signe (Tuuri) Sandberg. Don graduated from Ishpeming High School, class of 1945, and attended Michigan State University in the Army Specialized Training Program. He served his country in the Army-Air Force during and following World War II.

Don worked as a regional insurance representative for TransAmerica for 36 years. Don was a 51 year member of the Gaylord Country Club where he enjoyed golfing until the age of 86, and also a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Gaylord for 51 years. Don was a member of the Toast Masters Club, and enjoyed playing in horseshoe leagues. He especially enjoyed fishing on the Sturgeon River in the lower peninsula and made an annual trip to fish in the Fence River in the UP. He will be greatly missed by "Dixie," his canine companion.

Don is survived by 2 children: Mary (John) Sandberg-Reed of Negaunee and Donald K. (Karen) Sandberg of St. Ignace, MI, a daughter in law Carol Sandberg of Columbus, OH, 6 grandchildren: Amy (Gene) Flanagan, Kristin (Jackson) Moyer, Renee (Jim) Canavos, Kelly Sandberg, Jessie (Dan) Moore and Erin Sandberg-Reed, 8 great grandchildren: Chase & Riley Flanagan, Zoe & Imogen Moyer, Nicholas & Margaret Canavos, Madeline & Sophia Moore. Don was preceded in death by his wife Madeline Marie Sandberg, a son David A. Sandberg and a step grandson Brandon Reed.

A Memorial Service will be held at later date in Gaylord. Interment will take place in the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church Memorial Garden.

Memorials can be directed to a local Salvation Army in Don's memory.
