Ishpeming – Donald J. Roberts Sr., age 89 longtime Ishpeming Twp resident, went to be with the Lord on Monday December 21, 2009 at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee where he had resided for the past 3½ months.
Donald was born May 17, 1920 in Ishpeming the son of the late Richard and Emily (Barrett) Roberts. He moved with his family as an infant to Iron River where he graduated from High School with the Class of 1938. He then served in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater of operations, having received the Purple Heart. Donald returned to this area following the War and attended Northern Michigan University for 2 ½ years. He worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. for 32 years, starting at the Humboldt Mine and later transferring to the Tilden Mine where he worked as a plant operator. He had resided for the past nine years at Lost Creek in Marquette Twp.
Donald will be remembered for always giving a helping hand. He volunteered at a number of places including the Heart Club at Marquette General Hospital. He was a member of the Good News Assembly of God Church in Ishpeming and of the Pioneer Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Marion Roberts of Marquette Twp., a daughter Marilyn (Richard) Hill of Ishpeming and Donald Roberts Jr. of Ishpeming, a sister Marion Damberg of Dundee, 5 grandchildren – Kristen (John) DeVet, Jaclyn Hill, Chelsea (Jesse) Perry, Jesse Roberts & Jacob Roberts, 3 great grandchildren – Isaiah, Layla & Hannah, and an expected great grandchild in April, along with a special niece Shirley Hicks. He was preceded in death by his parents and 4 sisters.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Monday, December 28, 2009 from 10:00am until the time of services at 12:00noon at the Good News Assembly of God Church in Ishpeming with the Rev. John Roy to officiate. The Vietnam veterans of America Chapter #380 will hold military honors at the conclusion of the services. Entombment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Richard Hill, John DeVet, Jesse Perry, Jesse Roberts, Richard "Tom-bo" Borlace, and John Fitze.
