REPUBLIC, MI – Donald “Pappy” Syrjala, age 76, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, August 24, 2026.

Don was born in Negaunee, MI, on April 26, 1950, to Arnie and Florence (Maki) Syrjala. He was raised in Diorite, MI, and attended Ishpeming High School. On May 6, 1972, Don married the love of his life, Marie (Isaacson) Syrjala, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic, MI. Together they had two daughters and moved to West Palm Beach, FL, where they resided for 12 years before eventually moving back to the U.P.

While in Florida, Don acquired various certifications while working in construction, and afterwards, worked as a fitness instructor at the Palm Beach Community College. Upon moving back to Michigan, he ended his career working security at the mine.

In his free time, Don enjoyed four-wheeling, fishing, hunting, camping and game nights with his family and friends. He was known for his charismatic personality and under the tough, no-nonsense exterior, he always knew how to make you laugh.

Don is survived by his two daughters, Stacie Syrjala and Jill (Ryan Mattila) Syrjala; his five grandchildren, Ashley Saari, Halen (Erin Casey) Carello, Bryanna (Phillip Boshears) Saari, Olivia Mattila, and Brenden Mattila; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnie and Florence Syrjala; his wife, Marie, and two sisters, Maxine and Nancy.

Honoring Don’s wishes there will be no public services held.
