Obituary

Ishpeming- Donald R. Doney age 84 of 618 E. Empire St. Ishpeming, passed away Wednesday August 24, 2016 at Marquette County Medical Care Facility while in the loving care of his family, staff at MCMFC, and UP Home Health & Hospice.

Donald was born November 13, 1931 in Ishpeming to Bartlett & Eleanor (Anderson) Doney. Don graduated from Ishpeming High School, class of 1950. He served his country in the United State Air Force during the Korean War. Don worked for Cliffs Natural Resources for 40 plus years, retiring in 1994 as a shift supervisor.

Don was a life member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming, where he served on the property committee, took care of maintenance around the church and was instrumental with the organ restoration. While in high school Don played football and was on the 1950 State Champion basketball team. Don was an avid supporter of the Ishpeming Hematite's. He was a member of the Ishpeming ELKS Lodge and the Grumpy Old Men club.

Don is survived by 3 children: Sandra (Ray) Sundquist of Ishpeming, David (Tina) Doney of Appleton, WI and Pamela Allen of Ishpeming, a brother Reynold (Chris) Doney of Ishpeming, 6 grandchildren: Jason (Amy), Sundquist, Tammie Sundquist, Nicholas & Andrew Doney, Travis & Courtney Allen, great grandchildren: Braden, Lauren, & Madison Sundquist, sister in law Mary Doney, brothers in law & sisters in law:  Edmund & Susie Holmgren, Carl & Doris Pellonpaa, along with nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents, wife Althea (Holmgren) Doney in 2000, a son in law Russell Allen, a sister Dorraine Pantti and a brother Robert Doney, brothers in law & sisters in law: Lowell & Hilda Holmgren, Ann & Eric Rex

A memorial service for Don will be held at 11:00 am Monday August 29, 2016 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming with Rev. Warren Geier officiating. Don's family will greet relatives and friends at Bethany Lutheran Church on Monday from 9:30 until the time of service at 11:00 am. A luncheon will follow.

Military Honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380.

Memorial considerations may be directed to the Bethany Lutheran Church Memorial Fund in memory of Don.
