Obituary
Republic, MI- Donald C. Aho, age 79 of 7157 Hwy M-95 Republic, passed away Friday, September 14, 2012 at the Bell Hospital in Ishpeming.
Don was born in Republic on February 2, 1933 to Henry & Aileen (Mustamaa) Aho. He graduated from Republic High School and served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. Don worked for Cleveland Cliffs at the Republic Mine, for the Hanna Mining Company and National Steel at Groveland Mine in Randville and also worked in Death Valley and in Labrador City, Newfoundland; he retired as an assistant plant superintendant.
Don was active in the community of Republic, serving as a Trustee on the Republic Township Board for 16 years, a member of the Lillian Larson American Legion Post and the Grant Nyman VFW Post 5014 where he was Past Commander. He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church and the Hanna Mining Retirees Club. He enjoyed refereeing boys' and girls' basketball and umpiring men's slow pitch softball. He played basketball for the Shooting Stars city league, was an avid bowler, enjoyed hunting and was a history buff.
Don is survived by his wife Melba (Maki) Aho, whom he married on April 30, 1955, five children: Susan (Gary) Skinner of Fredericksburg, VA, Patricia Tresedder of Wausau, WI, Karen Royce of Republic, John (fiancée Patti) Aho of Medford, NJ and Nancy (Wayne) Johnson of Kodiak, AK, a sister Myrna (John) Todd of Republic, 11 grandchildren: Bradley, Patrick, Brad, Donny, Scott, Megan, Karl, Dustin, Zachary, Ethan and Sam, an aunt Laila Maze of Marquette, sister-in-law Arlene (Ron) Huotari, Iron Mountain, brother-in-law Allen (Gerry) Maki of Negaunee and Gerald (Char) Maki of Bradenton, FL along with nieces, nephews and many cousins. Don was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Dennis and Duane, a sister Joyce Jenkot, grandson Andrew and son in law Bill Tresedder.
Funeral services will be held 4:00pm on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic with Rev. Douglas Norquist officiating.
The family will greet relatives and friends at the Bethany Lutheran Church on Tuesday from 1:00pm until the time of service.
The Grant Nyman VFW Post 5014 will conduct Military Honors.
