Obituary

Champion- Donald Paul Abendroth, age 88 Lake Michigamme resident and former Ishpeming resident passed away, Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at the Lake Superior Hospice Unit at Marquette General Hospital with his family at his side.

Donald was born August 18, 1921 in Rhinelander, WI to Paul W. & Selma (Wilson) Abendroth. He graduated from high school from St. Johns Military Academy in Milwaukee and later attended Valparaiso University. Donald served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He served with the 264th Infantry Regiment & 66th Infantry Division overseas in the European Theatre of Operations. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Heroic action in Northern France.

Donald moved to Ishpeming in 1947, where he met his wife Lois (Hoiem) and they spent 54 years together. Donald worked at Robbins Flooring Mill, from the time he moved to Ishpeming until he retired as Vice President of the company in the early 1970's. Donald was a life member of the Ishpeming V.F.W. Post 4573, Ishpeming ELKS Lodge #447 and Moose Country Snowmobile Club. He was also a member of the Panther Veterans Organization and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Champion. Donald enjoyed traveling, taking cruises, boating and snowmobiling. He enjoyed living his past 5 years on Lake Michigamme and also living in Sarasota, Florida for a period of time.

Donald is survived by 2 daughters: Lori Abendroth of Marquette, Lynn (Gary) Laitala of Humboldt, 3 grandchildren: Luke (Becky) Abendroth of Ishpeming, Nicole (Keith) O'Brien of Marquette and Judy Laitala of Ishpeming, a brother in law Kris Hoiem, 3 nieces Brianna Hoiem, Linda Solka and Pam Pfeifer and special cousins: John, Carl, and Marie. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lois, 2 sons: Mark and Kurt and a sister Delores Kauffman.

A memorial service will be held 3:00pm, Sunday, February 21, 2010 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Champion with Pastor Carole Neitzel officiating. The family will greet friends and relatives from 1:00-3:00pm on Sunday at the church.

Memorial considerations may be directed to the Ishpeming V.F.W., Ishpeming ELKS Foundation or charity of one's choice in memory of Donald Paul Abendroth.
