Ishpeming- Dean R. Carlson, age 84 passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday June 8, 2016 while under the loving care of family and U.P. Home Health and Hospice.
Dean was born March 18, 1932 in Ishpeming. He attended Ishpeming High School and later went on to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Once discharged, he returned to Ishpeming to raise a family.
Dean held many positions at CCI before retiring from the Chem Lab. He was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers. He spent many years playing horseshoes in the Twilight Horseshoe League with his sons and bowled in various Ishpeming bowling leagues throughout the years. He had a passion for spending time outdoors, playing cards and spending time with his family. One of Dean's greatest prides was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He never missed a school or sporting event and could often be heard at a local baseball field giving a honk of the horn for a good hit or play on the field. No birthday was complete without one of Pa's special confetti angel food cakes.
Dean is survived by his wife Antonette "Dolly" (Ombrello), whom he married April 26, 1952, 2 sons: Dean (Michelle Weinferter) and David (Cynthia Krook) both of Ishpeming, 5 grandchildren: Amy (Michael) Moore, Keith Carlson, Brandi (Thomas) Petrocik, Bobbi (Leonard) Riutta, and Josh Carlson, 10 great grandchildren, 2 sisters: Carol Ann Luokkala and Nancy Kennedy, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Margaret & Lawrence "B-Boy" Gaboury, his in-laws Vito & Nancy Ombrello, daughter-in-law Penny Carlson and an infant grandson.
Dean's family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00am until 11:00am on Friday, June 10, 2016 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am with Fr. Larry Van Damme officiating.
A luncheon will follow at the K/D Hall at St. Johns.
Military honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380 prior to the Mass.
