Obituary

Champion / Marquette, MI – Dawson J. Carriere Sr., age 92, longtime Champion resident passed away on Saturday June 15, 2013 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette where he had resided since September of 2011. Dawson was born September 3, 1920 in Champion the son of the late Adolphis and Rosanna (LaCosse) Carriere. He was a graduate of the Baraga High School, Class of 1938, and worked Gauthier's General Store for a few years following graduation. He joined the United States Navy in 1940, and was first stationed in Corpus Christie, TX then in Jacksonville, FL where he went to advanced ordinance training. He followed that by patrolling the Atlantic Ocean for a summer and then was stationed aboard the USS Boxer in the Asiatic Pacific Region for three years, being honorable discharged in December of 1946 as a Aviation Chief Ordnanceman Master. Dawson married Irene "Boots" Fountain on February 17, 1947. Together they raised their family in Champion where they owned and operated the Northland Family Center for 38 years, retiring in 1984. He was a longtime member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Champion, where he had served on the church council. Through the years Dawson was also involved with the Champion School Board, American Legion, Champion Sport Club (baseball), Champion Lion's Club, CYO where he served as President, and the Marquette County Land Fill Board which he served on for 22 years. Dawson also enjoyed bowling, fishing and hunting, along with being an avid dancer and casino goer. Survivors include his wife Irene "Boots" Carriere of Marquette, 2 sons – Dawson (Candace) Carriere Jr. of Bonners Ferry, ID and Patrick (Beverly) Carriere of Stevens Point, WI, a sister Mary (Jere) Stafford of Marquette, 4 grandchildren Todd (Stephanie) Carriere, Tina Carriere, Brandon (Jennifer) Carriere, Zachary Carriere, and a great grandchild Samantha. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers – Charles and James Carriere. A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday June 19, 2013 in the Chapel at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette with Fr. Ryan Ford to officiate. The family will greet relatives and friends from 12:00noon until 1:00pm in the Chapel. Military Honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380 at the conclusion of the services. Inurnment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens.
