Ishpeming- Dawne Tippett Smail, age 87, of 100 Marble St. Ishpeming, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2012 at the Marquette Co. Medical Care Facility under the loving care of her family, the staff of MCMCF, and UP Home Health & Hospice.
Dawne was born March 20, 1924 in Ishpeming to Walter & Marian E. (Bengry) Tippett. Dawne was a graduate of Ishpeming High School and the nursing program at NMU. She worked as a registered nurse at Bell Memorial Hospital. After she retired from the hospital, she continued to care for others by working with Hospice (as it was then called).
Dawne was a member of the Ishpeming Rock & Mineral Club. As a member of Grace Episcopal Church, she served in many capacities, especially on the altar guild and as a lay reader. Dawne enjoyed gardening, reading and sewing and needlework. For years, she was also a member of the Pythian Sisters, Job's Daughters, and Girl Scouts.
She was a born naturalist who readily and happily taught the next generation about these wonders and made learning fun. She enjoyed hunting with her husband Lowell and also was concerned about conservation of wildlife and the natural environment. She always had bird feeders at the house and camp and delighted in identifying the feathered (and occasionally furred) visitors. Her life always included her deep love of animals, wild and domestic.
Dawne is survived by two daughters: Roxie (John) Walker of Switzerland and Melody (John) Visser of St. Louis, MO, a sister Irene Vicary of Ishpeming, two grandchildren: Miles (Jeannie) Anderson and Jared Anderson, two great grandchildren: Maya Anderson and Evan L. Anderson, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Dawne was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lowell Smail (on February 8, 2012), brother Dewey Tippett, sister Dixie Smail and niece Dixie Lee Smail.
Funeral services for Dawne will be held 11:00AM Thursday, March 15, 2012 at Grace Episcopal Church, Ishpeming, with Rev. Richard Graybill officiating.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday at the church from 10:00AM until the time of service at 11:00AM.
Pallbearers will be Miles Anderson, Jared Anderson, Richard Trudell and Todd Herman.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to UPAWS.
