Ishpeming – David J. Vahama, age 65, of 2487 Co. Rd. 496, Ishpeming passed away on Sunday February 15, 2015 at UP Health System Bell in Ishpeming.
Dave was born March 2, 1949 in Negaunee the son of the late Ero and Helen (Saari) Vahamaa. He grew up in Greenwood Location of which he was a lifelong resident of other than his service time. Dave was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1968. Following graduation he entered the United States Air Force, serving as a mechanic of Air Force II, during the Vietnam War from 1968 – 1973. Dave returned to Ishpeming following his service time and was employed as a electrician for C.C.I. at the Empire Mine for 14 years. Dave then worked at the K.I. Sawyer Air Base as an electrician until its closure in 1995. Dave moved on to be Mine Inspector for the U.S. Dept. of Labor (MSHA), from which he retired in 2005.
Dave was a member of the American Legion, Post #114 of which he had served as its first commander. He was also a former member of the AmVets. In his spare time, Dave loved being in the outdoors enjoying hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Sue M. (Porter) Vahama of Ishpeming, whom he married on Sept. 28, 1974, a daughter Brande (Ben) Comero of Ishpeming, a grandson Gavin Comero of Ishpeming, 3 sisters – Rosie Michaud of Green Bay, WI, Chris (Chuck) Cabrera of Elkhorn, WI and Barbara (Robert) Bradley of DE. He was preceded in death by a son David E. Vahama on Feb 4, 1998 and two brothers – Eugene and Paul Vahamaa.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 12:00noon – 2:00pm on Thursday February 19, 2015 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home. Memorial services will follow at 2:00pm at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Military Honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380. A luncheon will follow at the Bethel Lutheran Church. Harold Richards will serve as honorary pallbearer.
