Republic – David E. "Spider" Mattila, age 67, of 26495 Co. Rd. 601, Champion passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at his home and in the loving care of his family and the Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice.
David was born April 5, 1946 at the family home in Humboldt Twp. to William A. and Helvi (Lakanen) Mattila. He was a graduate of the Republic High school, Class of 1965. David served in the United States Air Force from 1965 – 1969 and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. David worked as a shovel mechanic for CCI from 1969 until his retirement in 2001, working at the Republic Mine and retired from the Empire Mine. "Spider" enjoyed reading, going to camp and cutting firewood.
Survivors include his wife Wanda (Heliste) Mattila of Champion, a son Michael N. Mattila of College Station, TX, brothers – Fred (Judy) Mattila of Champion, Ronald Mattila of Negaunee, Eli (Shirlee) Mattila of Silverdale, WA, sisters – Martha Hill of Chassell and Laura Sloney of Champion, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters – Agnes Warner, Ruth Puroll, Helen Feigl and Elma Laughlin, and brothers – Reino, Raymond, Sulo, William, George, Francis, Charles, and his former wife Diane (Perry) Mattila.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00am – 12:00noon on Tuesday July 30, 2013 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic. A memorial service will follow at 12:00noon on Tuesday at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic with the Rev. Kevin Kaiser to officiate. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.
