Ely Twp. – David A. Laine-Lucas, age 43 of 932 Co. Rd. CKC, Champion, MI 49814 passed away at 6:05pm on Wednesday October 28, 2009 at his home in Ely Twp. while surrounded by his loving family and the compassionate care of the Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice.
David was born December 31, 1965 in Ypsilanti, MI where he spent the first couple of years of his life, prior to moving to the Ishpeming area, where he spent most of his life. David was a graduate of the Westwood High School, Class of 1984. While at Westwood he had been active in school plays, band, chorus, a four year member of the swim team which won Upper Peninsula Titles each year, and the track team. Following high school, David attended Western Michigan University where he was involved with the W.M.U. musical tour group and did the artwork for the theatre departments programs.
David had also attended Northern Michigan University. Locally he has sung with the Seedsowers, The St. Paul's Concert Choir, and the Bethany Lutheran Choir.
David enjoyed acting and entertaining, and worked as a maitre d, in order to be able to follow his passion for entertainment, both locally at the Vista Theatre (PAAC) and in Madison, WI and San Francisco, CA. He will be remembered for parts in Oklahoma, Godspell, Guys and Dolls, The Diary of Anne Frank, The Foreigner, No Sex Please We're British, Love, Sex and the IRS, Catch Me If You Can, Jerker, Edie and the Experts, Annie, Grease, Little Shop of Horrors, The Best Little Whore House in Texas, The King and I, and How to Succeed. David was a member of Improv Comedy groups in Madison & San Francisco where he performed at the Rhinoceros Theatre. His caring for the elderly will always be fondly remembered especially by the residents of the Carlyle Condo Complex in San Francisco.
Survivors include his mother Barbara Lucas, his father Richard Lucas Jr., his grandfather Richard Lucas Sr., a brother Mark (Debbie) Maggio of Hancock and their children Owen and Jessica, a special niece Brianne, a step-sister Wendy Brown of Negaunee, 1st cousins – Renee Molitor, Jeannine (Bob) Dull, Jeffrey Molitor, Connie (Michael) Morovec, Bradley Roberts, Patty Davis, Aaron Repke, Avery Repke, John Roberts, Kevin Roberts, Karen Brewer, Kerry Jo Anderson, and Kristen Lucas, aunts and uncles – Nancy & Dave Molitor whom he affectionately called "Mom and Dad" in Madison, Linda & Dave Repke, Alicia Roberts, Brenda Houghton, George & Judy Roberts, and Tom & Robin Lucas. He was preceded in death by his father Larry Laine, brothers - Stephen Lucas and Karl Laine and his godparents Gunnard and Ina Anderson.
The family will greet friends and relatives from 5 until 7 pm on Friday October 30, 2009 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home and again on Saturday October 31, 2009 from 1:00pm until the time of services at the Bethany Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2:00pm at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming with the Rev. Warren Geier to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
